Things to See and Do in the Mendip Hills

With the November weather on the horizon, it’s easy to cast your mind forward to the sunny days of next year – and there are few places better to soak up the newfound sun than the Mendip Hills.

The Mendip Hills are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there is a lot to see and do amongst the rocks, trees and waters of the Mendips. Here are just some of the things to look forward to when the sun comes around again!

Cheddar Gorge

Cheddar Gorge is one of the most defining natural landmarks the UK has to offer, reaching into the sky with stark cliffs and diving deeps with mysterious, pre-historic subterranean caves. Cheddar Gorge and its caves lets you experience the Mendips from every angle.

If you’re after a great view then you can take part in the 400ft gorges cliff top walk route. This three-mile walk takes you the full length of the gorge and offers you some of the best views in Somerset. The top of the cliff face, as well as the specially built lookout point, can be reached by the 274-step Jacob’s Ladder – so you best bring your walking boots!

Cycle the Strawberry Line

The Strawberry Line, as the name suggests, was once a railway line. This line, named after the delicious fruit it carried, closed in 1965 but was re-opened in 1983 when the conversion of the route to a pathway began and is a favourite with touring cyclists.

You can pick the line up where the trains once passed through, at Yatton Station, where the Strawberry Line Bike Hire offers refurbished bikes for hire. You can take the line all the way into Cheddar if you’d like to visit the gorge via bike, with extensions planned to cover the entire old line – from Clevedon to Shepton Mallet.

Brean Down

Local to Lakeside Holiday Parks and on the edge of the Mendip Hills you can find the scenic costal area of Brean Down. This down sits 97 metres above sea level and features 1.5 miles of rugged scenery that is the perfect venue for a short walk with the reward of stunning cliff views at the end. At the seaward side of Brean Down you’ll find Brean Down Fort, a defence installation built in 1890 that saw service heavily throughout both world wars.

The earliest recorded settlement on Brean Down dates back to the Bronze Age with the cliffs themselves dating back over 350 million years.

Mendip Activity Centre

Confusingly just called “Mendip” this activity centre is better described as an action centre. Offering a huge range of sports and activities, the Mendip centre is a one-stop-shop for sports fanatics and adrenaline junkies. Founded in the 80s, the centre offers dry snow sports including tobogganing, water sports, archery, mountain biking, rifle shooting, frisbee golf and a shed load of other activities that we couldn’t possibly list here.

There’s plenty to do in Somerset no matter what the time of year is – but we all like a bit of sun! Guarantee your spot at Lakeside next season and book today to make sure you don’t miss out!
