The Top 5 Activities for Kids and Toddlers in South Devon
Looking for some amazing days out with the kids, or got some little ones you need to keep entertained as the summer draws to a close? South Devon boasts a whole host of fun-for-the-family days out from adventure parks to animal sanctuaries and aquariums! So, although the summer may be winding down, there’s no need for the fun to stop in Devon. We’ve put together a list of our absolute favourite days out that we think kids, toddlers (and parents) will love!
River Dart Country Park
Make the most of those last precious days of sun in the beautiful grounds of Dartmoor National Park. 90 acres of parkland are home to River Dart Country Park, a well-loved adventure park packed full of family attractions and activities. Enjoy the great outdoors with a wide range of park activities. Whiz down the mini zip wire, survey the waters on the pirate ship and slither down the snake slides! Also, new for 2019, reach new heights in the ‘Bounce Zone’, an inflatable haven that little ones will just love. Under 2s go free at River Dart Country Park so bring them along to the toddler beach or playground for a fun-filled day. Too much to explore for one day? Return for a free visit within 7 days by showing your valid proof of purchase and experience the fun all over again!
National Marine Aquarium
Explore the deepest depths of the ocean with National Marine Aquarium, the UK’s biggest aquarium. Get up close and personal with creatures from across the globe with the various aquarium zones. Brave a visit to the Starry Smooth Hounds in the British Coasts zone, a cool water shark with a ‘starry’ pattern, or meet Friday, a Green Turtle from the Atlantic Ocean zone. Wonder through the UV tunnel and become immersed in a wave of colour as tropical fish dive and dart by. Children can also burn off some excitement in the Lola Land soft play area or the sea-cret garden, open every day of summer. Bring your toddler along to Toddler Tuesdays for only £1 when purchased with an adult entry ticket and enjoy activities such as story-telling and treasure hunts.
Torquay’s Dinosaur World
Travel back millions of years to the Jurassic period and walk amongst the dinosaurs at Torquay’s Dinosaur World. A great way for children to learn about natural history and also have a fantastic time too; adults and children alike will love what’s on offer at Dinosaur World. Explore the interactive indoor exhibit with full-sized and scaled dinosaurs, get the kids to take on the explorer quiz and become dinosaur experts and discover mesmerising fossils. Don’t forget to make the most of the amazing photo opportunities on offer and capture this moment with the whole family. Free for children under 2, Dinosaur World is the perfect day out for young explorers.
Woodlands Park has something for everyone; amusement rides, waterpark coasters, 125,000 sq ft. of indoor playground and even a zoo park! Being the largest theme park in Devon means there really is something for everyone at Woodlands Park, from toddlers to grandparents. Little ones will love Toddlers Village, a safe play area including the Mermaids Ball Pool and a paddling pool for when the sun is shining. Feeling adventurous? Visit the Falconry Centre and meet Peppa the little owl or Malachite the elegant eagle in one of the daily displays. The Zoo Farm also has plenty of animals to meet and greet including meerkats at meerkat mealtime!
The Donkey Sanctuary
Looking for a budget-friendly day out that’s still full of fun and excitement? Visit the Donkey Sanctuary completely free of charge (donations welcomed)! This award-winning visitor attraction is open 365 days a year, so come rain or shine, you’ll always have an amazing place to visit. With plenty of loving donkeys waiting to meet you, the Donkey Sanctuary is an amazing place to visit to have fun and also support a local charity. Take a stroll through scenic farm trails, get lost in the hedge maze and learn all there is to know about donkeys at the nature centre talks and tours! 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the donkey sanctuary, making it the perfect year to visit and join in on the fun. Make your trip extra special by going to an event. The 18th September hosts an ‘all things donkey’ experience day, so come along and meet the donkeys!
