Our Favourite Autumn Attractions in Somerset

The approaching autumn means an end to the summer. We’ll be swapping golden days for golden leaves and cold drinks for cold winds. All is not lost however, no matter the weather there’s plenty to see and do in Somerset!

The Helicopter Museum

The Helicopter Museum can be found just outside of Weston-super-Mare – making it a short drive down the M5 from Lakeside Holiday Park! It features a collection of over 100 helicopters from around the world, from Russia and America to central Europe and the UK.

The museum is run by a team of passionate volunteers who work tirelessly to care for the museum’s aircraft and undertake all of the conservation work themselves.

The Helicopter Museum also holds many special events, including classic car shows, open cockpit days and air experience flights. The latter of which can be booked directly with the museum for your chance to take a flight in a modern day chopper!

Cheddar Gorge Caves

It may be tempting to hide away in towns – or at the very least, indoors – when the weather is on the cold side, but buildings aren’t the only places with walls and ceilings! The show caves at Cheddar Gorge stay at a steady 11 degrees, no matter the weather outside – making them cool in the summer and warm in the winter!

The show caves offer the chance to explore ancient natural structures and learn more about the natural history of the area, as well as the prehistoric humans that once lived there. Be sure to enjoy the “Dreamhunters” exhibit, a 30-minute experience that brings ancient history to life!

SeaQuarium Weston

The Weston SeaQuarium can be found on Weston’s own seafront and features a stunning selection of freshwater, marine and tropical species from all seven seas! The SeaQuarium features over ten different zones of the scaly, the slimy and the downright frightening!

Come face-to-face with some of the most ancient creatures on the planet in the EvoZone as you meet relatives of the first animals to walk on land. Explore the ocean depths while staying dry with the aquarium’s spectacular underwater tunnel – letting you get up-close with an array of British marine life.

New for 2017 is the “Fantastic Phobias” exhibition. This new creepy exhibition will test your bravery with a selection of freaky beasts – from creepy crawlies to rodent intruders. So step on board the SS SeaQ and face your fears!

Westonzoyland Pumping Station Museum

The village of Westonzoyland is located a few miles outside of Bridgewater and is home to the area’s oldest steam engine. Once used for ground drainage, the 1831 steam-powered pumping station is now home to over 25 different steam engines and pumps that helped power a variety of machinery.

The museum also features a café and bookshop as well as a small narrow-gauge railway. The WZLR railway was originally installed to demonstrate a typical maintenance railway that was often used by river authorities and peat works. In more recent years the railway has taken on a more central role and is used to transport firewood for special steam days – where the old boilers are stoked once more!

There’s all this to do and more in Somerset this autumn and the best thing about all of these great attractions? They’re all just a short distance from Lakeside Holiday Park – making it the perfect hub for your Somerset break this autumn!
